My Name is Frederick Rice and I Was Born Here is the story of the longtime resident of Big Bend, Texas, known for his life as a cowboy and homesteader in the region.  His story is documented in the book My Name Is Frederick Rice and I Was Born Here, published by the Big Bend Natural History Association. This memoir, part oral history and part family biography, details his experiences growing up and living in the remote Big Bend area before the region became a national park. 

His granddaughter, Laura Bridge, has shared family stories and artifacts at events like the Big Bend Natural History Association’s Annual Pioneer Reunion, highlighting the Rice family’s role in the area’s history, including their resilience during the Mexican Revolution and their strong sense of community.
