This pocket-size guide covers 12 easy-to-moderate hikes in neighboring Big Bend Ranch State Park. The largest state park in Texas at some 311,000 acres, Big Bend Ranch offers rugged mountains, amazing views, dark skies, and plenty of solitude. It’s a great place to explore in and of itself, and it’s often wide open when Big Bend National Park has no camping availability or just feels too crowded.

Hikes in this book range from 1 to 8 miles, with tips for combining trails if half a day isn’t long enough!

Please do note that Big Bend Ranch State Park is generally more remote, rugged, and primitive than most parts of Big Bend National Park. Be sure to check in at a state park ranger station and make sure you have all the necessary safety information. Most of the park has no cell service, and emergency response times range from hours to days. “Easy to moderate” hikes in this park are still pretty tough and not for the unprepared.
