The Department of the Interior mourns the loss of Nathan Matthews of our U.S. Wildland Fire Service who lost his life on July 25, 2026, as a result of injuries sustained on June 27, 2026, while supporting suppression activities on the Knowles Fire.
In honor of Nathan, the Secretary is instructing all DOI owned and leased facilities to fly the United States Flag at half-staff for seven days, beginning the morning of Monday, July 27 through sunset on Sunday August 2, 2026. Please keep Nathan’s families, friends and co-workers in your thoughts.
